Epic RPG, Online and Off, A Historical Account And The Mummy

By America P. Hammond

Who knows when the epic RPG really began, but it has changed a whole lot. Role-playing games began as table games played with counting cubes and miniatures. This table game of sword and sorcery also became the computer game Dungeons when screens were still green. Reenactments of past battles became an RPG in miniature scale with a large, constructed table top designed as the battlefield inclusive of all battlefield accoutrements and tiny, painted soldiers. Somehow I can just see men as long ago as the 16th century amusing themselves in their parlors, creating the original RPG.

From these games arose LARPs, Live Action Role Playing Games, a kind of improvisational theatre, but acted solely for the amusement of those involved. I can see those 19th century romantic poets amusing themselves like that. These epic RPGs more often than not employed costumes and accessories.

From the card table and the green screen to deep virtual milieus the modern gamer's desire for realistic adventure can be sated without ever getting out of his or her chair.

The Mummy, an epic RPG based on the film of the same name, is no different. Inspired by the mystical milieu inhabited by sorcerers, Pharaohs, and their evil minions, this will become a much-loved game. The gamer will delight to the accuracy of the 1930s Egypt setting taking its inspiration from the halcyon days of Egyptology. Unity, a magnificent engine for game creation, is responsible for some of those realistic environments, offering 3D effects without the requirement of 3D rendering capabilities on the computer. The environments are massive, twists and turns, mazes and labyrinths test your memory and your mettle as you navigate them. Oh, of course you're also distracted a little (a little? Okay a whole lot!) by every type of foul denizen of desert death revisited.

Hone characters according to your own desire and dexterity, whether Raider or Cultist, Brawler, Scholar, Priest or Enforcer. One-on-one, marauding in bands, or full-on melees with any amalgamation of power - fire or magic, can be had in this epic RPG. Whether earned, bought, stolen or shared, an incredible arsenal of guns, blades, relics and incantations await. All it takes is whatever YOU invite to the table, your own personal style of warfare, whether alone or on a team.
