By Sam Davis

An unlikely profession is gaining momentum in the United States. This is the profession of dog sitting. If you are one of those who have a love for canines and can spare a couple of hours then you can make your love into a money making enterprise.

If you looking for extra money apart from your regular earning, then this might sound like a good option for you. Sitting dogs and walking them is a quality-time job that makes room for you to indulge in the other part-time jobs as well. This profession includes wide variety of activities that range from an exclusive dog walking to an exhaustive pet sitter.

At-home sitting and walking are the most common services offered. Since the setters provide many more services than mere walking, hence they get a better package than what the other walkers usually get.

A pet sitter is better paid than a dog walker as the scope of his job is vaster than that of the latter.

In simple words a pet sitter has to mainly focus on looking after the pets and taking the responsibility of everyday routine activities such as walking, regular feeding, grooming and lastly keeping the pet engaged. At times, on the insistence of the owner a pet may need to be taken to a vet and in such cases the responsibility of administering medication if any lies with the sitter besides taking any precautions mentioned by the vet.

Dog walking Do you enjoy taking dogs for walks? If you do, and are interested in the job, you must be aware of a few things. This will ensure a better service to your customers. And the first on this list is getting a strong leash for the dog.

Even though dog owners all have their own leashes for their dogs, it's good to carry two different types of your own when you take over the duties.

The four basic leashes are flexible leash, leather leash, nylon leash and metal chain. The best and highly recommended leash for the dogs are the metal chain and leather leash, which are considered better than the rest two.

Leashes are made from many types of materials. But the ones ruling the market are the metal chain and leather types. They are a favorable choice. Not very far behind are the nylon and flexible ones. The choice of the leash is yours. As we presume that you will be walking more than one dog, therefore we suggest that you buy a leather leash as well as a metal one. Although the leather leash is the most sought after, but in case you see that the dog has the habit of chewing the leash then its time you switched over to the metal one. Both the leashes are easy to handle and you will not hurt the dog while walking it.

We give you some useful tips that you should follow when you take the dog out for a walk for the very first time. These tips will be a great help to you.

1. Avoid areas where the presence of squirrels and any other small animal is obvious. As dogs are known to chase these animals, hence they may get over excited and begin to run after them. In case you a beginner you may get dragged by an over enthusiastic dog.

2. You might have heard that it is best to take a dog to a lawn or garden for a walk, however, there is little truth in this since these lawns and gardens are maintained through the regular use of pesticides. Dogs are very curious animals that are bestowed with sharp olfactory senses, which mean if they inhale these dangerous chemicals then it might prove fatal for the dog. It may affect his senses to smell and may cause digestion problems. Therefore, it is best to take the dog for walks to sidewalks or pavements.

3. You must discourage the dog from feeding on greenery on the walk, IF it is a habit of the dog. This is because there always a risk of the dog eating a plant that proves to be lethal for it.

4. In case you decide that the weather is conductive for a long walk then don't forget to carry water with you. Basically a dog has the tendency to get dehydrated in a very short while, therefore to prevent any untoward thing from occurring; it is best safe to be equipped with water.

5. Take along a few treats for the dogs on the walk. Taking a treat of its preference helps the dog take to you quicker. It will become easier for you to handle the dog thereafter. It's okay to show your appreciation and care for the dog in the form of treats.
