Home Security Tips for the Savvy Home Owner

By Mark Mahaffey

How much time do you spend thinking about your home security strategy? Chances are not enough. But you should make it a priority. These days, houses are empty more because families are smaller. The effect of smaller families is that homes are empty. And of course, home intruders like unoccupied homes-it makes it easier for them to do their dirty work.

Further, unlike days past, there are many families in our culture that need both parents to hold jobs in order to keep up with the household expenses. Think about it: if the kids are in school and the mom and dad are both working at their jobs, the house is empty for the better part of each day.

Another shift that has happened in our culture is how well we know our neighbors. In the past, people were very good friends with their neighbors which meant that there was another pair of eyes watching their homes and property. Since many people today are not familiar with who lives around them, we have lost this important part of home security.

Therefore, you are wise to take your home security into your own hands to ensure that you and your family are protected as much as possible. One very smart thing to do is to have a home security system installed in your home. These systems can almost act like a friendly neighbor, because they essentially "watch" your home at all times and can alert you if trouble arises.

Just be sure to have this system connected to a monitoring service. If someone tries to break into your home, your security system can automatically register the break-in, sound and alarm and alert the monitoring service. At that point, the monitoring service can call the police department and have people on their way to your home within minutes.

You might also want to consider getting a guard dog. Guard dogs are very effective at keeping home invaders away. These dogs are bred and trained to recognize when a stranger is near the house, and often their vicious barking will be enough to convince a would-be intruder to choose a different home to attempt to rob.
