Small Pest Can Cause Big Electrical Problems

By Jerry Ricca

Domestic pests are little but they can do a lot of harm - frequently causing hundreds of dollars worth of damage, as you will see in the stories below. It's the jungle out there! Although electricians don't have to struggle with lions or trap crocs, they find that the actors behind many electrical problems are often other animals commonly known as 'pests'.

Geckos get electrocuted in PC boards, resulting in over $1,000 worth of electrical repairs plus the cost of replacements. This happened to a home in Mt Gravatt not very long ago. Only a small little gecko caused this huge burn damage.

With their tiny little size, they can run inside just about everything - and specially all kinds of air-conditioning units, computer's and almost any electrical appliance. The only known method to keep geckos outside is to catch each of them and free them outside the house. As with every electrical maintenance and repair job, in order to save money, always ask and look to see if a less costly repair can be made. However, in some cases, regrettably, the damage is big and there's no way around it. Geckos are very problematic too with all air conditioning systems - and the repair can be costly if the switchboard is spoiled.

A stove circuit is tripped by a mouse in Eight Mile Plains

Mice are a common household pest. Given their love of small secretive spaces, they often cause problems in home circuiting and electrical systems. At this home in Eight Mile Plains, a mouse had become caught in the stove, tripping the switch breakers and preventing the system from resetting. The dead mouse was removed and the electrician carried out a full set of tests to make sure the mouse hadn't caused damage to other areas.

Always be prepared

When you contact your home electrician, make sure that his service van has all the tools that are required to finish most kinds of jobs - so you get the job done in the same day, keeping costs down and maintenance as convenient as possible.
