Millions of international visitors flock to South Africa every year and the numbers are on the rise. There are many good reasons for the country's popularity with the international traveler, not least of which is the exquisite natural beauty of the land.

Most of the tourists who flock to our country enjoy visiting those sites that that have made South Africa internationally renowned, such as the wonderful wildlife parks that we have. Zoo Lake is actually a large park with a man made lake popular with rowers. It is perfect if you fancy a weekend stroll that takes about two hours depending on which route you take. The Lake is also near enough to the city of Jo'burg to make it easy to reach. Over the weekends it attracts a lot of people and is a veritable hive of activity. This is especially so on the first weekend of every month because that is when Zoo Lake hosts the "Artists Under the Sun" event, when artists display their creations.

Zoo Lake's history goes back a long way - in fact, all the way back to the early 1900s. It was then that the founders of Johannesburg gave both the Johannesburg Zoo and Zoo Lake to the city as a gift.But there was one condition attached: it had to be available and open to all peoples living in the country irrespective of race. In the early 1900s, there was no apartheid but the people of the country lived separately nonetheless and so a condition such as that was certainly something out of the ordinary.

Since the beginning Zoo Lake has hosted picnics, riding, and even been the site for some hunting. It has also offered shelter to wild animals for a time. Those who enjoy bird watching will enjoy a visit to the Lake because there are a number of different bird species who have taken up residence on the large island in the middle of the lake.
