By Claire Dowell

The number of couples who filed for divorce in Florida is quite alarming these days. With its increase in number, the documents and the files that the government manages also increase, thereby adding tasks to their daily routine. Thus, looking up information of divorce cases tends to become time consuming and difficult.

A divorce certificate is made when the marriage of a couple is no longer working and they decided to make their separation legal. Making the separation legal helps the couple to continue on with their lives normally as a person without a partner. With this, the divorcee can process transactions in the government using the certificate as proof of the separation. There are transactions that would call for a divorce certificate such as insurance related matter. Without the certificate, requests may not be processed. Some people would conduct a background check on their fianc to make sure that they are going to marry a person who is single, or legally divorced. This can prevent problems by the time they proceed with the marriage application. Also, a divorcee cannot remarry if the separation was not made legal or documented properly. Such record is also used in genealogy research. Although, it is not as important as birth and death records, if the family tree is not updated with the separation it may cause some problems in later generations.

Divorce is a sensitive issue, not just in Florida, but in all parts of the country. This is the reason why the information that can be found on the record is controlled and limited. One can only find the basic information about the separation on a public document. This includes the complete names of the couple, the date and the place where the divorce has been filed and granted. The reason for the separation is kept private to respect their privacy. The custody of the children and the division of properties and assets are also kept confidential.

Only divorce cases which have been registered since June 1927 are available for request in the state of Florida. One should know that there is a very minimal fee of $5 to have the request processed. If the requesting individual does not have any idea as to when the separation of the couple was legalized, a $2 additional processing fee has to be paid per year that is being looked into.

In Florida, the Vital Records Section is the one responsible for keeping the public documents of the state, which includes the divorce records. The state office only keeps those which are dated from 1927; otherwise, the files are kept at the county clerk office. This is the place that one should go to if the record that is being requested is before 1927. One can also file the request via mail order but all of the requirements have to be enclosed on the envelope to avoid delay and hassle. Another way to get a copy of the divorce certificate is to search for it online.

Marriage and divorce records in Florida are easier to obtain now. With the help of the Internet, one can request for a copy of such document and the results are displayed in just seconds. This makes the retrieval process convenient and faster.
