Car Selling Does Not Have To Be Boring

By William Jones

There are people who mistakenly think that the job of a sales representative is dull and boring. The truth is these are the people who have kept and are keeping the automotive industry alive. Whenever new automotive models are brought out, it is the job of the sales representative to sell them.

Cars are long-term investments that could be a bit pricey. This is one reason why customers take their own sweet time in choosing the car they want to buy.

People who wish to buy a car usually look for fuel efficiency, conformability and safety. If there is a car in the dealership that offers all of these 3 features then the sales representative would only need to make the correct moves to deal with a soon-to-be satisfied customer.

Building rapport with the customer takes time and practice to perfect, which is why selling a car could prove to be a challenge. Just like any job, selling cars for a living might not be for everybody but if one does have a selling talent then there should be no reason to not give it a go.

When a potential customer enters the dealership, the representative knows that the person is interested in buying a car. It is time to get to the point after the initial pleasantries are done with.

* What kind of car does the customer prefer? Will it be for family or personal use?

* Does the customer do a lot of work or carry a lot of stuff?

* How much is the customer willing to spend?

* Does the car have to have certain safety features?

* Which color do they prefer?

After getting a few pertinent details, the sales representative can show what models are available that fit the customer's requirements. This includes the safety features, fuel consumption for highway and city driving, and other amenities that are included with the car.

The sales representative usually allows the customer to get into the drivers' seat to get a feel of the car interior. The customer, along with the sales representative, can also test drive the car to have a feel of its road performance.

There are, of course, some lean days and months in the business. It is during these lean months that the management of the car dealership comes up with enticing promotional offers to draw in potential customers.

Some of these offers are zero interest or low payments. Some even offer very low down payments followed by easy payment terms. All of these are developed to make the car price more affordable.

Most customers are concerned about the vehicle's warranty. In case anything happens, what is covered by the warranty?

The sales representative can explain in full detail about the warranty and its coverage. Service contracts are also available for the cases that are not covered by the warranty.

It may cost a little extra for the customer but the honesty and friendliness of the sales representative is a good indication that the car is already as good as sold.

Do not be impatient if the customer does not immediately make a decision. They may even require a week to make that big step. A good sales representative should take it upon him/herself to follow-up with the customer without becoming a nuisance.

Simply put, the automotive industry does make money by selling cars. This task is easily accomplished by well-trained sales representatives out there on the sales floor.

In addition to the regular basic pay, a sales representative for the car industry also earns additional commissions for each car sold. Now you know why car selling is really fun.

However, the second most common method for selling cars is through private sales. Maybe you are looking at selling your own baby? The best approach when first planning to sell a car privately is to do a little research, about the market--to be armed with enough info. You can do that easily by determining how much your old vehicle is worth.

Gather answers to these important questions: Is it likely to receive multiple buying offers? Is the car going to be fairly easy to sell? Who is most likely to be interested in this type of car? Is it a popular commodity these days? To get accurate results, the first step should be to check some car ads online at the various web sites that specialize in this.

Once you have your questions answered, the second most important thing should be turning your attention to the appearance of the car or truck. Be sure to have it professionally detailed, or save money and do it yourself. Clean the trunk if it has one, the engine compartment to a decent degree, then get out your car wash buckets, soap, and a good microfiber drying towel. Carefully wash and dry the vehicle, then turn your efforts to the interior, especially the driver's seat area and dashboard. Take your time detailing the interior, and clean any soil off the steering wheel. Finally, you are ready to post your ad online or in a local newspaper publication, and get ready to sell your old jalopy!
