Beautiful Granite Counter Tops Should Be In Your Home

By Olivia Cross

Concord NC is only miles away from the largest open faced granite quarry in the United States. This makes it almost necessary for you to have this natural stone installed in your home. Whether it is in the bathroom, kitchen or the laundry area, granite counter tops can turn whatever room it is into a place of beauty and functionality for you.

This is a natural stone with many variations in color, grain and markings. The process of removing the stone from the ground and getting it installed in our home can be an interesting one. It all begins with large earth moving equipment and someone who can handle explosives.

When these very large chunks of stone are uncovered and moved into the initial processing areas, they must then be cut into smaller pieces that can fit into the large trucks. Many of these pieces are further sized by cutting or blasting them so a reasonable size can be achieved for delivery to the next step of getting it to you.

When these pieces can be moved, they are taken to a stone cutter for more work. This craftsman will trim the pieces into sizes that are a little closer to what a counter top would be. They will then store all of these pieces so that you, or your general contractor, can inspect them closer to the time you will need them.

Looking for the right piece for your home, whether bathroom or kitchen, will take several considerations into account. These are based on your own specifications and could include overall color of the stone. They have various naturally occurring colors from black, through browns of various hues and into a clear white. The gloss of the pieces should be looked at, although, this is usually not dealt with until later in the selection and processing of that item.

Another element of beauty that must be looked into is the grain pattern. The grain can be very tight or extremely loose. It can run from side to side in a roughly straight line or be whorled in exciting patterns. You have the option of selecting, out of all of the pieces available, what, in your mind, is the best looking one. This is going to last a very long time and you will be living with until you move. After selection of the piece you want, processing moves to the specifics of your project.

Exacting measurements are taken and cutting, grinding and polishing will begin. These tasks will take that piece that is only slightly larger than you need and end up exactly the size and shape you need. All holes that need to be cut for sinks, faucets and trash disposal will be done and preparation for installation will begin. This is usually not a do it yourself project for the home owner.

The polishing that began in the stone cutters shop will continue before final installation and be completed after that. These finishes can be anything from a high gloss to textured or even matte. That is a decision for you to make and the finished look should be what you want. By hiring a professional crew, your dream counter can be a certainty.
