Multiple Charitable Giving - The Choice Is Yours

By Jose Kennedy

Have you ever been asked what you would do if you had all of the money in the world? Most commonly, people respond with, "I'd buy a bigger house or travel." This is often followed by, "I'd do more money to charity." People who are charitably inclined usually are living a rich, full life. We all have some affinity to a specific charity we like to support. As a Financial Life Planner, I have come to learn that Multiple charitable Giving is an important goal for most people. Yet most of us don't have a process for funding this goal.

Being human, we are compelled to help one another. Our hearts break at the sight of a cancer stricken child. We celebrate when a wounded, orphaned whale has been rehabilitated and returned to the sea. And, we are moved when we see footage of people from all over the world joining an effort to clean up and rebuild a nation torn by a natural disaster. You may even have thought to yourself, "I wish I could be there."

Most people find that writing a check is the easiest route to go, as long as they have the money, and that makes giving money the most common means of donating. Particularly for people who are not especially interested in how the funds will be utilized, a financial donation saves time and effort that can form a part of other types of donations.

Homepage Heroes (HH) allows you to create a page from which to begin your usual internet activities. Designate the charity you wish to support and add retailer icons (essentially, visual bookmarks of the places you regularly shop). Every purchase made from a retailer on your page or the mall at HH results in a donation to your favorite charity.

You can get your kids or spouses involved and create your own account title. I know families who have semi-annual meetings with their kids and grandkids to discuss where the grants should go. What a great way to introduce philanthropy to kids! The DAF accounts can be set up with as little as $5,000. You can support multiple charities with a single donation, usually with as little as $100. When you are ready to recommend to the DAF to make a gift to a specific charity, you just fill out a form and mail it to the DAF. The donation from the DAF can be anonymous or can have your name identified as the donor.

To sum it up, charitable donations can come in all forms. How people decide to donate are as varied as the sums and items they provide to others. It's not that important what the donation is or how it is given. The main thing is that donations do take place and that everyone takes part in them. Sharing with those who are in need is a key component of how we function as a society.

It is not a good idea to give or send cash for any charity donation. Cash can be lost or even stolen. You will also have no written record of your donation for tax purposes. A better idea is to write a check. Make the check out to the charity organization and not to the person making the solicitation.

Grow endowment - Since it is almost impossible to know exactly when a planned gift will "mature", including these gifts in the budgeting process can be problematic. However, designating these revenues or a portion of them to endowment is a guaranteed way to grow the fund and may instill a sense of ongoing legacy for contributors.
