All There Is To Be Known About Savannah Kittens

By Walter Campbell

Savannah cats were recognized and listed as a breed in the nineties and became a popular breed among breeders. When a domestic cat and a serval which mostly exists in medium sized large eared wild African cat interbreed the resulting offspring is a savannah cat. The first Savannah kittens were produced after a male serval was bred with a domestic Siamese cat.

Features of crossbred cats greatly determine the features passed on to kittens. A unique feature with them is that they are tall and slim. This gives the illusion of great size. With this illusion in mind one would also expect more on weight. More Serval traits and looks are maintained besides size. Generation lines greatly determine size. Kittens born in the first generation are big. This is influenced by strong genes of the parents.

Chausie and Bengal kittens join Savannah in the line of hybrid cats. The three have looks of Serval which disappear with each generation. Male savannahs are visibly bigger than females. They have a spotted coat which is also a very distinctive feature. This feature is contributed by crossbred male Serval. The pattern is non-standard and colored.

The colors of their coats range from rosette, marble, snow, blue, cinnamon, to chocolate. The earlier breed of cats has had a great impact on the current ones in both the desired and non-desired traits. Breeders closely observed the first litter and reported ten years later that some traits were missing. They decided to crossbreed the kittens to achieve desired traits.

They have their exotic looks because of the existence of several unique serval characteristics. When considering to buy one it is important to keep an eye on the color markings, hooded eyes, very long legs and tall deeply cupped rounded erect ears. These kittens are very tall and thin. Their hind end when the cat is standing is usually elevated than its prominent shoulders.

They have small, tall and slender necks. At the back of their necks they have a central light band bordered by black, dark grey or brown shade which portrays an eye like effect. Their tail is relatively short and has black rings and a solid black tip. The eye color can be blue, green, brown, gold or slightly a blended shade as they approach adulthood and are boomerang shaped.

They have a volatile nature which is their common behavioral character. These kittens can be trained to fetch and walk on a leashed. They also have a tendency of following their owners around which shows how loyal they are. When a new person who they have not interacted with is around some flee and hide while others have been reported to be social and friendly to new people.

There jumping ability is top notch. They can jump on top of doors, refrigerators and even cabinets. The funny thing is that most cats dislike water however this is not the case for savannah cats. They love water and will play or even immerse themselves in water. Another exciting thing is that whenever they greet a person they fluff their tails.
