Be Your Own Boss By Opening A Shop And Selling Wholesale Bagels

By Timothy Brown

Most employees have dreamed about having their own businesses at one time or another. They might imagine this would give them the freedom to come and go as they please while getting rich. In reality most small business owners put in more hours than any of their employees. They may see good profits, but it takes time. If you have really decided to give entrepreneurship a try, opening a little shop, buying wholesale bagels, and reselling them to the public might be worth pursuing.

There is no law that says you have to be a baker and offer customers goods you make yourself, especially if you don't know anything about baking. It might take a long time to find really good recipes and learn how to perfect them. Instead you could spend the time with a mentor who is a successful, retail business person and doesn't mind showing you how to become one yourself.

It is unrealistic to think you can go into business without any capital. You will have to find money somewhere and friends and family are usually a good place to start looking. You could offer them the opportunity to become an active partner or remain a silent one. Your other option is to go to the bank with a realistic business plan and fill out a loan application.

If money is tight, you might consider opening a take out shop instead of an eat in restaurant. That way you can save a lot of money on decor and furniture. You won't need as many employees either. The rent will be more expensive, but it might be worth if you set up shop in a mall, near a school, or in some other high traffic area. You'll get noticed and have more potential customers.

Opening a specialty shop is fine, but if bagels are all you're going to offer, your focus is probably too narrow. Coffee, tea, juice, and even smoothies, are natural accompaniments to bagels and should sell well. You could even buy a vintage refrigerator cheaply and stock it with hard to find varieties of jams, jellies, and other toppings.

It would be nice if you didn't have to spend money on advertising and marketing, but you will so you might as well do it right. Your website should go up before you open the shop doors for the first time. Advertising a grand opening with discounts, door prizes, and coupons will get people in the door. Enticing them with specials on a regular basis is one way to develop a loyal customer base.

Hungry people are attracted to the smell of fresh baked goods, so you need to keep your warming oven working all the time. This way you will always have fresh food for your customers, and the odor coming from your open door will be irresistible to passers by. Light background music and a daily specials board outside your door are also inviting.

It is a fact that most small businesses fail. You don't have to be part of that statistic however. Working hard, smart, and offering a unique product in the right location will give you an edge.
