Important Notes On Occupation Health And Safety

By Stephen Edwards

Every person in the work place is at risk of getting hurt in one way or another. Hazards range from being treated in a disrespectful manner by your boss, colleagues or clients to being physically injured in the course of duty. It is, therefore, important that all places of work have occupation health and safety rules to guide in the smooth running of the day to day activities.

Unlike physical injury which is usually taken more seriously because of its glaring nature, psychosocial matters in the office may easily be overlooked. Respect among colleagues and their seniors at the workplace is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, some bosses forget that titles need to be accompanied with humility and respect to those they serve.

Harassment meted on low ranking employees at work by their supervisors is very common. The former may not be in a position to complain for fear of being reprimanded, terminated or being demoted even further. On the other hand, some junior colleagues are very disrespectful to their seniors out of mere spite and are lack work ethic. They totally disregard supervision with the intention of frustrating their seniors.

Some workplaces do not allow workmates to get engage in love relationships because this could tamper with their relationship at work in case the love goes sour. Sexual harassment is another thing that is regarded as a punishable offence at work. It is important for the management to put down these rules in a clear and concise manner and make the staff be fully aware of the consequences. This is because some acts may be taken to be merely a way of showing simple affection without any sexual intention.

Psychological counselling helps a great deal for employees who have been directly affected by major events at the workplace. They may have incurred severe physical injury, raped or endangered the life of another in the cause of duty. The sessions provide an opportunity for them to share the problem and find ways in which they can renew their effectiveness at work.

There are certain occupations that pose a very high risk of physical injury to their employees. Some of them include the healthcare industry, hotel industry, engineering, construction industries and so on. A welder can easily get injured as the sparks lodge into their skin or eyes. Healthcare providers face the danger of not only getting injured but also directly contracting illnesses when they accidentally get bruised in the course of handling sharp instruments.

Employees need to be equipped with the right safety wear to minimize risk in the course of duty. This could be in form of helmets and reflector jackets for construction workers. Gloves, lab coats and masks are some of the basic necessities for healthcare workers. Employees need to work under the supervision of their seniors to enhance precision and minimize the chances of causing mishaps.

In conclusion, it should be stated that it is very important that employees are trained on first response measures in case of any unexpected incidences. This includes organizing classes that teach ways of dealing with accidental fires at the work place. Routine fire drills also need to be organized to make sure that the employees are always prepared.
