Flashlights can come in handy in many different situations, but they can become nearly necessary in certain emergency situation. From a long power outage at home to being stranded on a dark roadside, having an emergency flashlight on hand can make all the difference.
Once you have filled your car with more than enough of both of these items, you should branch out and bring stuff like a camping lantern. You might want to limit the amount of food that you carry, but you have to consider what would happen if you got into trouble. You would be left with nothing but the items that would have very little use to you in those situations. Food that you bring with you while camping doesn't have to be boring.
Bringing Along a Stove or Grill
Building one's own flashlight using materials that can be found around the home (and maybe around the family car?) is relatively simple and does not take an electrical engineer to accomplish. By following a few steps and by using common sense, a person will be able to fashion their own emergency flashlight from products found around the home. First, however, one will need to compile the resources they will use to make their own flashlight. The materials that one will need include a cardboard tube (an empty toilet paper roll is a prefect size, but one can make any smaller-diameter tube work in a pinch), 2 batteries (size D preferably as these fit well into the toilet paper tube and are large enough to provide sufficient power for the homemade light), Tape (electrical tape if possible), insulated wire five inches in length if using D batteries(tin foil can be used in place of wire, although it is extremely more difficult to work with and is not nearly as dependable), and a small light bulb (2.2 volt bulbs work best but nearly any small bulb will do, especially effective are bulbs from a string of Christmas lights).
Cooking Before You Leave
Execute your Plans
Insert the second battery negative side down (so that power can transfer from one battery to the next) with the wire running alongside both batteries. At this point, the cardboard tubing should be sealed on one side with batteries placed positive to negative within it and a wire running the entire length of the inside of the tube and attached to the bottom (negative) side of the first battery.
Regardless of where you're going or what you're bringing with you, it's essential for you to invest in large amounts of ice. Pack so much ice that you have another cooler along for the ride just for ice. You should try to stay somewhere that's close to where ice is sold. If you're going to be in the middle of nowhere for days on end, you should go to one of the more modern camping grounds. You will get your doubters when you decide that this is the right approach for you. You have to put that out of your mind because your safety and enjoyment are the most important things. You should want to look back on your trip fondly rather than in a negative manner.
