Understanding How Scrap Car Buyers Work

By Henry Green

Some owners drive their old cars until there is almost nothing left of them. If you own one of these cars, and are ready to part with it, knowing you would not get anything from a used car dealer, you should think about scrap car buyers. You need to learn how these businesses work in order to keep your expectations realistic.

You need to understand that most salvage yards and cash for cars outfits are primarily interested in the weight of the vehicle. You might have tinkered around with the car yourself and installed some new parts in hopes of getting it running again. This isn't going to increase the value of the vehicle for a junk auto buyer.

It's not going to matter that the air conditioning is working or you have a custom stereo system. These may have value in the parts market, but not when you are selling a vehicle for salvage. In the same vein, you won't impress a salvage yard into offering you more because the vehicle is still operable. Salvage yards are mostly concerned with metal recycling.

You can sell the parts yourself if you know what you're doing and have the time to do it. You will probably get more out of the individual parts selling them yourself, but it is a labor intensive operation. All the fluids must be drained and the wires, engine, transmission, and seat have to be removed for starters.

It's great if you have a ready buyer for the car parts. If you don't, you'll have to find space to store your parts until a buyer comes along. You will also have to spend time researching the value of the parts you're selling.

A salvage yard is probably your best and fastest solution for selling a junker. You'll find the ones nearest to you online when you put in the search words and your zip code. The majority of them are willing to pick junk cars up for free and will pay you cash right on the spot. They'll even do all the paperwork for you.

The kind of vehicle you're selling is going to determine, in part, how much you get for it. Makes and models that have lasted over time without many changes to them won't bring as much as less common ones. Parts to mass produced vehicles are pretty easy to find, and that keeps the price down. It might be worth your time to shop around and see if you can find a dealer who is specifically looking for parts you're selling.

There are incidentals to consider that will affect the money you get for your junk vehicle. Where in the country you live is one of them. Salvage yards are interested in different cars and parts in different regions of the country. How far the tow truck has to go in order to pick up your vehicle will affect the price. Sellers who can deliver their vehicles themselves will save a little money.
