Know Some Lighting Techniques Used In Digital Photography

By Fra Arellano

With the advent of digital photography, many people now have found it easier to take photos. Advancements in the field of photography have given both hobbyists and professional photographers the opportunity to experiment in order to deliver quality photographic images. But among other things, photographers have to develop their ability to utilise and manipulate light when taking photographs. Light, after all, is the most crucial aspect of photography.

In doing photo shoots, the best times of the day are during the morning and in the afternoon, just before sunset. However, if light is not available, you can utilise an artificial light and create different effects especially for indoor, underwater, or even nighttime photo shoots. You can use different types of lighting to attain your desired effect.

Video Lighting In Photography

There are various occasions where photography is crucial and one of these is weddings. To create enchanting images of the bridal couple, a video light can be of great use. Because flash produces a strong and unflattering effect, most photographers use video lighting for studio portraits. Whether the photo shoot is in a dark location or a large studio, you can never go wrong with a video light since it offers a wide range of lighting.

Underwater photography requires proper lighting, too, especially when you are some metres below the sea surface. Using a handheld underwater video light, you don't have to worry about lighting the surroundings to capture wonderful images and colours of fishes, crustaceans and corals.

Tips When Using Video Light For Photography

Video lights are naturally strong, but the good thing with this equipment is that the effect can be adjusted. You can put a gel in front of an LED video light to produce a warm or tungsten effect. LED video lights also have a diffuser that will help give a soft effect on your photos. For some photography techniques, photographers sometimes use a video light together with other lighting equipment such as speed lights and flashguns.

It's also possible to achieve various lighting effects by placing video lights in different positions during the photo session. For example, if you would like to create flare in the photo, position the equipment beneath the subject and as you take a shot, make sure that only the edge of light is visible in the photo.
