The implementation of the Freedom of Information Act has ordered the government to let the local residents of a state access their personal documents. This is being followed by most of the states in the country including Virginia. Virginia divorce records are one of the documents that can be accessed by the residents in the state.

The state's divorce records are being controlled and the information on the public document is limited. Unlike other public documents, divorce records are complicated records that some of the information on it has to be kept confidential for the protection of the involved individuals. One would know only the basic details about what happened such as the place where the separation was finalized as well as the date when it was granted. The child custody, asset and property division are disclosed from the public. Also, one would not know about the reason why the marriage ended up in a divorce.

There are several reasons for accessing divorce records in Virginia. One of the common one is to process marriage again. A $12 fee is required in order to process the retrieval of divorce certificate. The state of Virginia only releases documents that were registered since 1918. If the records have been recently registered it has to be kept private and handled by the county clerk office. The records can only be obtained by those whose name is on the file itself. A court order has to be presented if one needs to access the files of other people. A proof of identification has to be presented in order to get a copy of the divorce certificate.

One can request for the divorce certificate at the office of the Vital Records Section where all public documents of the state are being managed. The office can only provide records since 1918, files prior to that have to be obtained from the office of the county clerk office especially if the file that is being requested is newly registered. This has been made easier with the help of the Internet.

The Internet has made the retrieval of the record easier and convenient. The need to go to any office has been eliminated since it can be obtained even at home. One can even search for a free online divorce records by testing the services offered by several websites. Although, this is a penniless transaction, many would still want to pay for the online services because of the quality of results that can be obtained from it.
